World History final presentation 2025Denmark’s government changed overtime due to the shifts in control.1300-1700
The Kalmar Union was made to establish stability and union in the Scandinavian region. It consisted of Denmark (Iceland and Greenland part of that too). It was a union that was ruled by Queen Margaret the first of Denmark.
But, due to the tension and competition between Sweden and Denmark, Sweden split from the Kalmar union and became independent. This led to instability and the kalmar union dissolving into individual states and countries.
Sweden and Denmark fought over territory and control. They fought over control of the Baltic Sea region, which was a good territory for trade.
1701-1900
The Peasant reforms of Denmark in 1784 created opportunities for Danish peasants. They didn’t have to stay on the land where they were born anymore, they were able to take out government paid loans, and they were able to own land.
The constitution of Denmark was written in 1849.This constitution led to the end of absolute monarchy (very limited power for the king), increased opportunities to vote, and better rights. Those rights included freedom of speech, personal freedom, freedom of association, freedom of assembly, and childrens rights of education (private, public, or homeschool). The king’s original power was split between the legislative authority, the parliament, the king himself. The power was divided up in order to prevent abuse of power.
Denmark ruled over two “dutchies”, Schleswig and Holstein. (Dutchies are territory owned by dukes, duchesses, and the like). There were 2 wars involving these dutchies. There were revolts in Germany at the time, so Schleswig and Holstein decided to follow suit and rebelled against Denmark. Due to their rebellion, Denmark attacked in the first Schleswig war. To end the first war, a preliminary peace treaty was signed. Later, a constitution was signed that joined Denmark and Schleswig. Then the second Schleswig War happened when Austria and Prussia declared war on Denmark, due to that constitution. The troops invaded Schleswig and the fighting ensued. To end the second Schleswig War, the Vienna treaty was made, stating that Denmark had to give up Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg.
1901-1999
Before WWI, Denmark and Germany had a financial agreement, called the Dawes Plan. After WWI, Germany was forced to pay heavy reparations. They fell back on this plan and drew money from the Danish Central Bank, sending Denmark into their Great Depression.Global trade had also collapsed, due to countries being financially unstable, affecting Denmark’s Imports and exports. The great depression caused lots of public debt, failing economy, and hardship for the population.
Denmark was occupied by German forces in 1940 during WW2 to invade Norway. Denmark had good ports and airfields, which the German forces took advantage of. The Baltic Sea area I also talked about earlier was a good place where the German troops transported their supplies without being stopped.
The Danish constitution was revised in 1953. It allowed female succession, shrunk the national legislature to only one chamber, and it also made sure that one political party couldn’t secure the majority power in the government.
2000-2024
The Liberal-Conservative Coalition of 2001 was when the Liberal party of Denmark won most of the seats in the parliament, leading to a coalition between the Liberal party and Conservative party.( a coalition government in this case is the temporary alliance/cooperation of 2 or more political parties.)
Conflicts with freedom of speech were caused in Denmark concerning criticism of Islam. In 2005, some very offensive comics were published making jokes about Islam. Protests and Diplomatic tensions ensued after the publication of these comics. The artist Kurt Westergaard faced an assasination attempt in 2010. There were debates about maintaining freedom of speech, but at the same time respecting other religions and their rights. In 2015, in a freedom of speech gathering, there was a shooting, ending in 2 deaths and 5 injured law officers. Later that night, there was another shooting, in front of a synagogue, killing one Jewish man and injuring 2 law officers. These events triggered reconsideration of current freedom of speech laws. Debates about freedom of speech laws are still going on today in Denmark. Debates on freedom of speech are still going on today in Denmark.
The Immigration Policy issues are still current issues in Denmark today. Denmark has been under the leadership of prime minister Mette Frederiksen since 2019. She has shared and acted on her goal of wanting to reduce the number of people seeking asylum to zero. She has not yet achieved this, but she has increased deportation, changed the rules on family reunification, lowered the financial benefits for people seeking asylum. Some new rules are very controversial, including the rule that the fortified borders are allowed to confiscate/take personal items from immigrants, the change in that if your application for asylum was rejected, you are only given food and not money, and incentives to leave Denmark are given, up to 5,400 Euros! More ways are being implemented too, trying to make Denmark sound and seem bad and unappealing to immigrants looking for a place to go.(0)(0)(0)
