What do both systems use in their compositions?

They both use Sanskrit verses in some of there compositions. They also use combinations of alankaars (this is how you say it in Hindustani) in their compositions. In Hindustani this is a taan. In Carnatic it's a taanum.

The same notes sometimes have different names in the 2 systems. For example, the komal Re in Hindustani music is actually shuddha Ri in Carnatic music.

Some raags are the same in the systems but have different names. Example: In Hindustani music there is raag Bhupali. In Carnatic music there is the same raag, but its name is raag Mohanam. Both the systems have seasonal raags.
