Describe the emergence of humans.
Homo sapiens evolved from chimpanzees in eastern and Southern Africa 5-6 million years ago.
The first species was Homo habilis, the first to use stone tools. Then came Homo erectus, the first species to control fire and migrate out of Africa. After many other species have died out, only one remained; Homo sapiens.
This era of migration and hunter-gatherer lifestyle is known as the Paleolithic Era. A transition to a settled lifestyle and the introduction of agriculture and domestication of animals marked the end of the Old Stone Age. Complex societies formed and civilizations arose. This marked a significant turning point in world history.
