Section 1

(19 cards)

synthrotic

Front

immovable (sutures)

Back

bursitis

Front

overuse of a joint or stress on a bursa. inflammation, need rest.

Back

joints

Front

(or articulations) are functional junctions between bones -bind parts of skeletal system, make possible bone growth, permit parts of skeleton to change shape during birth, and enable to body to move in response to skeletal muscle contractions. -can be grouped by degree of movement at bony junctions (S, A, D) -made of bones and ligaments

Back

bilateral comparison

Front

Comparison of an injured side with an uninjured side

Back

strain

Front

-muscle/tendon

Back

RA

Front

autoimmune disorder. painful and debilitating. synovial membrane inflamed and swollen. articular cartilage damaged, fibrous tissue infiltrates, interfering with joint movements. joints ossify, fusing articulating bones.

Back

sprain

Front

-ligaments -result from overstretching or tearing the CTs, including cartilage, ligaments, and tendons, that are associated with a joint, but they don't dislocate the articular bones. -is painful, swollen, so movement is restricted. need rest. -three degrees: mild, moderate, severe.

Back

amphiarthrotic

Front

slightly moveable (vertebrae)

Back

diathrotic

Front

highly moveable (shoulders, hips)

Back

unhappy triad

Front

-clipping penalty -MCL, ACL, and medial meniscus

Back

OA

Front

degenerative disorder, or inherited. softens articular cartilage and disintegrates. movement becomes restricted. affects active joints. (fingers, hips)

Back

life span changes

Front

-joint stiffness is an early sign of aging joints affected: -fibrous joints: may bring bones close together causing them to fuse. -cartilaginous: the intervertebral disks may collapse on themselves, which reduces height in the elderly. also, range of motion decreases with the stiffening of the spine -synovial: fewer capillaries serving the synovial membrane slow the circulation of the synovial fluid. joint loses elasticity and stiffens.

Back

arthroplasty

Front

surgical repair or replacement of a joint

Back

moveable joints

Front

-ball and socket: hip, shoulder -condyloid: fingers -gliding: wrist, ankle -hinge: elbow -pivot: neck, radius and ulna (proximal end) -saddle: thumb

Back

classification of joints

Front

can be classified by type of tissue that binds the bones at each function -fibrous: the DCT holding them together contains many collagenous fibers -cartilaginous: composed of hyaline or fibrocartilage that connects the bones -synovial: composes most jints of skeletal system and allow free movement (diathrotic) ~these joints are more complexed: consist of articular cartilage, joint capsule, and synovial membrane (secretes synovial fluid)

Back

Lymes Arthritis

Front

bacterial infection from ticks. intermittent arthritis in several joints.

Back

arhtroscopy

Front

examination into joint using arthroscope with fiber optic lens

Back

ligaments add...

Front

stability to joints

Back

arthritis

Front

inflamed, swollen, and painful joints. common types are rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and lyme arthritis.
